Felix Hernandez Rejects Trade to New York

The New York Yankees and Seattle Mariners had all the components of a mega-deal completed. The Yankees new front-office was ready to make a splash that included the acquisition of 2018 American League Cy Young winner Nathan Eovaladi and veteran Felix Hernandez. The only thing that stood in the way of the deal being finalized were the 10/5 rights of Felix Hernandez.

Members of the Mariners organization spoke with Hernandez by phone on Monday to explain the decision and why they felt it would be best for everyone. It is reported that after speaking with the Mariners, the Yankee front-office reached out to Hernandez asking that he waive his veto rights in order to join the Yankees.

Ultimately, the fate of the deal rested upon the decision of the pitcher nicknamed The King. Hernandez would go on to tweet the following announcement Monday afternoon:

I decided it’s better for my family and me to stay in Seattle. I have always been a Mariner and I want to continue being a Mariner.

Much Love,

The King #34
