Lone Star State Blockbuster
Astros & Rangers Agree to Blockbuster
Tuesday, June 26th, 2018
A trade between Houston and Texas was made official this afternoon as the Astros have sent 24-year-old RHP James Kaprielian, 23-year-old RHP Michael Hicks, 34-year-old RHP Matt Garza and 19-year-old minor league CF Doug Ingram to the Rangers in exchange for 24-year-old minor league LHP Tim James, 20-year-old minor league LHP Cody Chapman, 18-year-old minor league LHP César Beltrán, 20-year-old minor league RHP Anthony Richardson and 19-year-old minor league LHP Julian Gompertz.
To this point in the season, Kaprielian shows a 6-6 record, 17 starts, 115 innings, 72 strikeouts and a 3.83 ERA.
This was described as a heart-breaking decision for the Astros as James Kaprielian has been a favorite amongst the Astros front-office.
The Astros demanded and received a large haul. They view Tim James as a left-handed version of Kaprielian. When asked about the package, Astros GM Matt Wells said, “Chapman has the potential to become an ace…then there’s two young pitchers in rookie ball who we have as future aces. Top it off with what we see as the best relief prospect in MLB Pro [Gompertz], and it’s a package that was impossible to turn down.
For the Rangers, this deal builds upon what was already a young and dynamic rotation with Jamie Widner and Reggie McMillan.
By adding Michael Hicks and Matt Garza the Rangers helped solidify their bullpen as they move to the second-half of the season.
