Dodgers vs. Padres: NL West Tie-Breaker Preview

2017 Season – Head to Head

Los Angeles Dodgers
88-74

vs.

San Diego Padres
88-74

Three Keys

  1. Can Steven Matz match Tommy HansonIn six starts against the Padres, Tommy Hanson has pitched 43 2/3 innings and allowed just 9 runs.  The Padres have hit .171 against Hanson and have a BABIP of just .193.  While the Padres managed to scrape 4 runs off of Hanson in a 6-3 win earlier this month, Hanson allowed 1 or fewer runs in 4 of his 6 starts agains the Padres.  In his only start against the Dodgers, projected starter Steven Matz went just 5 innings and allowed 4 runs on 6 hits.  The Padres have won the game in 7 of the 8 last starts made by Matz.
  2. Which Ryan Nash shows up? The Padres centerfielder hit .290 on the season, but just .237 in 18 games against the Dodgers.  While Nash has not had much luck getting hits off of Dodger pitching, he has managed 15 walks and on-base percentage of .392.  Hitting leadoff, reaching base is key to provide opportunity for Fielder and Stanton to push across runs.  At-bats by Ryan Nash could be telling in this matchup.
  3. Blake Swihart: Can he keep the Padres from stealing bases? The Padres finished 2017 tied for the second most stolen bases in the National league.  Dodgers catcher Blake Swihart threw out just 26% of would be base-stealers, his career worst percentage.
