Unprecedented in Boise

Unprecedented in Boise

We are going to see something never done before in baseball.  GM Eddie Buchholz is taking his pitching heavy draft class (7 pitchers in the first 8 rounds of the draft when factoring in trades) and making his Boise team’s (A-) pitching half of the roster entirely comprised of this 2019 draft class.  12 pitchers in all will start their career in A-.  They will be the only other pitchers on the team.  The incumbents were either promoted, demoted, or released.

With 2 supplemental picks in the 1st and trading up twice in the draft the Rockies landed 6 really solid future starters.  The best of them may wind up being 18 year old Cameron Jones (6’7” RHP) who will get started atop the Rookie League Grand Junction rotation.  The remaining five headline the Boise Hawks starting rotation

Hawks Rotation

#1 Drake Fellows (6’5” RHP) – Touches 95 on the gun along with 4 pitches and high-quality leadership traits (Overall pick #46)

Drake Fellows – 10-3, 2.58 ERA, 20 GS for Vanderbilt in 2019.

#2 Ken Waldichuk (6’3” RHP) – 5 Pitches and already further ahead in terms of development compared to the rest of the Rockies pitching class (Overall pick #120)

#3 Matt Cronin (6’2” LHP) – Groundball pitcher who has 4 pitches in his arsenal with a devastating circle change. (Overall pick #15)

Matt Cronin – Rockies 2019 1st Round pick. Cronin pitched three seasons at the University of Arkansas.

#4 Trey Taylor (6’7” RHP) – Throws 96 MPH with 4 plus pitches including already almost mastering his fastball (Overall pick #28)

#5 Ed Brown (5’10” LHP) – 6 pitch arsenal with high work ethic (Overall Pick #78)

The bullpen will be headlined by Nolan Hoffman (6’4” RHP) who’s nice jump with control and velocity on June 1st had the Rockies front office thinking they may have gotten a steal having been able to nab Hoffman in the 8th round.

When asked for a comment the Rockie’s GM responded “Listen I do think there is risk with a move like this.  Low A can be really competitive and they will lack peer veteran leadership in the pitching room.  On the other hand, you have 12 guys who are all in this together, who are banded together by doing something never having been attempted before. I am freakin excited!”.
