Update: Shohei Ohtani Free Agent Status

Coming Soon: Shohei Ohtani

As was announced back in January, Shohei Ohtani will be coming to MLB Pro this off-season. Ohtani will be created and added to our file shortly after the MLB season is completed.

[Aspects of the following are still slightly subject to slight changes, everything will be official before the end of the playoffs.]

From there, there will be a short period of time between the end of the World Series, arbitration, and players filing for free-agency.

The initial bidding process (more on that to come later) will take place over a period of days.

The teams that make it to the final stage will take part in the process of explaining:

  • How Ohtani will fit into your organization
  • What your plans are for Ohtani (ie: how would he be used)
  • Any “guarantees” you might have for Ohtani
  • Any additional items that you feel would make your team the right spot for Ohtani

My goal is for all of this to be completed no more than a week into FA (possibly sooner, dates as stated are still a bit TBD). As such, if you know you plan on bidding on the right to talk to Ohtani, it’s never too early to start working on the above.

As was mentioned back in January, Ohtani will come to MLB Pro with some service time. MLB Pro and the NPB have agreed to the following contractual terms for Ohtani:

  • Ohtani will enter MLB Pro with 2 years of service time credited to him.

In addition, Ohtani, those representing Ohtani, and the NPB have agreed to two pre-set contractual options for teams as follows:

  • The WITH “No-Trade” Clause Included Option
    • 2019 Season: $550,000 (3rd year of service time)
    • 2020 Season: $2,000,000 (4th year of service time)
    • 2021 Season: $4,000,000 (5th year of service time)
    • 2022 Season: $8,000,000 (6th year of service time)
  • The WITHOUT No-Trade Clause Included Option:
    • 2019 Season: $550,000 (3rd year of service time)
    • 2020 Season: $3,000,000 (4th year of service time)
    • 2021 Season: $6,000,000 (5th year of service time)
    • 2022 Season: $12,000,000 (6th year of service time)

Teams will need to include which contract option they would like to have Ohtani under when they submit their bidding plan.
