White Sox Trade Block 2018
The Chicago White Sox have several ML veterans on the trade block. They are listed below with a bit of information about each and an idea of our desired return for each piece.
1B Dan Black / 30 y.o. / $1.6m …. Power hitting first basemen. Left handed bat who still produces a healthy on base percentage. Had a .250 ISO in limited at bats with the White Sox in 2017. Is still in his arbitration years so could be declined at year’s end for a free release. Asking price is very low, only seeking a low-level prospect or cash.
OF John Schultz / 28 y.o. / $535k …. Lead-off hitting OFer who can play virtually any OF position, especially both corner positions. A 3.8 WAR player in 2017 and still in his arbitration years and not yet eligible in 2019, meaning his salary will remain only $535 next season. Very cheap get for solid production. Had a .364 OBP in 2017 between the White Sox and Padres and a 13.3% walk rate between the two clubs. Seeking two prospects in return, preferably one being an offensive piece who could replace Schultz’s production in a couple years. Trading Schultz’s proven production (and cheap salary) for the eternal hope of MLB prospects.
SP Jeanmar Gomez / 29 y.o. / $1.5m …. Back of rotation starter for a team needing inexpensive depth. Earning only $1.5m and in his arbitration years, so a free release at the end of 2018 if it’s so desired, or can be retained for an additional year cheaply. Seeking only a single low-level prospect, maybe a AA/AAA MR still pre-rule 5.
RP Kenneth Giles / 27 y.o. / $535k …. 95-97 mph reliever. 4 pitches, 55% GB rate in 2017. Seeking only a mid-level prospect in return, not a top-5 player but someone who would enter our top 20 prospect list.
RP Lester Oliveros / 29 y.o. / $1.1m …. Extreme ground ball pitcher with high velocity and solid production as a MR for a competing organization. 67.5% GB rate in 2017 for the White Sox. Could serve as a late inning arm in a pinch or in case of injury. Had 23 holds in 2017 and 28 in 2016 for the Dodgers. Seeking a similar return to Giles…. a mid-level prospect, not a top guy but someone who would infiltrate our top 20 prospect list.
LHP Blair Walters / 28 y.o. / $535k …. Left-handed hitters hit only .234 against him in 2017 at the Major League level. Still pre-arb so 2019’s salary will also be only $535k. He also still has one option year remaining if you want to stash him away in AAA as bullpen depth. Seeking only a low-level prospect in return, preferably someone who could be just outside our top 20 prospects, preferably at the OF, P, or corner infield positions.
