Fans at Busch Stadium got a rare gift today as Clayton Kershaw of the Cardinals tossed a no-hitter against the Washington Nationals.

Although Kershaw did not appear to have his best stuff in the early innings, he turned masterful as the game went on, ultimately striking out 10 and walking 1 in a 5-0 St. Louis victory.

“We had our chances in the first few innings when he was hittable, and we couldn’t capitalize on them,” Washington manager Dave Serrano said later. “In the last four or five innings, he totally shut us down.”

In all, Kershaw faced only 28 batters. While getting into his groove, he was helped by several defensive gems.

“I don’t remember a better-pitched game,” Cardinals manager Mike Matheny said. “And how about our defense today?”

Checking out his stats for the season, Kershaw has notched 9 wins and 4 losses in 18 starts, 2.22 ERA and struck out 165 batters in 129.2 innings.
