End of an Era in St. Louis

40-32 Not Good Enough: Cardinals Fire Matheny

Monday, June 21st, 2021

Earlier reports stating Cardinals manager Mike Matheny was fired were confirmed today by team officials.

Matheny‘s time as St. Louis manager ended due to reasons undisclosed by the team, but rocky relations with players along with disagreements with the front office can probably be credited for the dismissal.

Matheny had no comment on the situation, but ownership did have a comment.

“We thank Mike for his time with the team, but we felt it was time to part ways,” team general manager Ryan Brookman said in a statement. “Expectations were not met and promises were not fulfilled, and the Cardinals would rather continue their commitment to winning with a new manager and a different direction.”

That ends a nine and a half year run as manager of the Cardinals for Matheny. Under Mathney, St. Louis won the division five times, made the playoffs six times, and compiled a record of 834-700.

In a press conference this afternoon, the Cardinals ownership announced that former Toronto Blue Jays manager Dave Magadan will take over in St. Louis.
