Rays Recap (7/29) – Griffith Shines Again

Tampa Bay: Gary Griffith had his 2nd straight dominant start and the bats scored just enough in a 2-1 win over New York to win the series.

Griffith struck out 9 over 6.2, walking just 1 and allowing 1 run. Offensively, the Rays managed 8 hits, 2 each from Jorge Alvarado and Will Macoy.

In bigger big-club news, the team reached an agreement to send SP Jeff Wallace and prospect 1B Cam Randall to the A’s for SP Shelby Miller. Miller is just 4-8 on the year but has solid peripherals, striking out nearly a batter an inning. In 2020 Miller was 5th in the AL in ERA and had the 6th most quality starts. Adding him into the back half of the rotation solidifies it moving forward and his ability to eat innings (3rd in the AL in 2020) should ease the burden on the pen.

Durham stayed red-hot, running their record in July to 22-4. CF Alek Thomas cleared the bases in the 9th with a double to give the Bulls a 3-2 lead that Gerald Goodwin would hold onto for his 27th save.

Navy Shuler struck out 7 over 6 scoreless but the Biscuits would fall 5-0 in 13 innings. Dominic Clementi had 3 hits to boost his average back to .300.

Josiah Gray threw 7 shutout innings, striking out 8 in Charlotte’s 2-0 win. Gray is now 9-1 with a 1.63 ERA for the Crabs.Bowling Green had their own shutout, 5-0 behind Erik Johnson. They’re now a weighty 78-26.

Peyton Wilson had 3 knocks including his 20th double.

3B Glenallen Hill Jr had 4 hits to boost his average to .380 in the Renegades 13-2 win. Acquired in early 2020 for Desmond Henry, Hill has 14 doubles in 36 games and an OPS nearly at 1.000.

Shawn Rose had a walkoff single for R Port Charlotte to win their 8th in 10 tries. Rose, 20, was an 11th round pick in 2019 and is in his 3rd season with the team.
