Silver Linings – Carter Young

August 10, 2021

When the White Sox decided in late May that we had no chance of competing this season and it was time to begin moving some of our veterans, RP Bernardo Gallo was a reliever on our ML club for which we received a bit of a bidding war.  We ended up going with the package being offered by the Tampa Bay Rays, mostly because of the SS prospect Carter Young.

Young is a 20-year-old switch hitting SS who had not played above rookie ball in the Tampa Bay system after being drafted in the 9th round of the 2019 Amateur Draft.

For the A-ball Kannapolis Cannon Ballers, Young is hitting 339/393/489 for an 881 OPS, 159 OPS+, and 386 wOBA.  He has also played a slightly above average defense at SS while stealing 9 bases with only 1 caught stealing.  He hit 390 in the month of July and is hitting 375 in the month of August.

In the same trade, the White Sox also acquired SP Julio Robina (a Cuba defector who has struggled at A-ball thus far) and veteran reliever Brian Johnson, who has produced a 1.88 ERA for the White Sox big league club over 21 appearances, striking out 12.0 per 9 IP.
